YB Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui

keynote speakerYB Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, born 31 August 1945, is the current Malaysian Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water. He is a Malaysian Chinese and of Hakka descent. He has been the Member of Parliament of Miri in Malaysia since 1985 and is currently the party organising secretary of the Sarawak United People's Party.

Chin was born in Kuching, Sarawak. He is married with Datin Ruby Wee Hui Kiang with whom they had 2 daughters and 1 son. He was educated as a Barrister-At-Law at Gray's Inn, London in 1971.

Chin returned to Sarawak and joined the law firm, M/s Wan Ullok, Jugah & Chin and started his law practice in Miri, Sarawak in 1972. He retired as a partner of the law firm upon his appointment as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Ministry of Welfare in 1986.

He has been the Member of Parliament of Miri in Malaysia since 1985 and is currently the party organising secretary of the Sarawak United People's Party.

In 2004, he was appointed to the Cabinet of Malaysia as the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities. Prior to his full ministerial appointment, his previous posts were Deputy Minister of Housing & Local Government and Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

On 10 April 2009, Chin was appointed as the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water.

 

Dato’ Ir. Lee Yee Cheong, BE Hons (Adelaide), DPMP, KMN, AO.

keynote speakerDato’ Lee, 73, is the Malaysian Chairman, Governing Council, UNESCO International Science Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation in Kuala Lumpur. He is a member of the National Science and Research Council Malaysia and an ex-officio member of the Global Science and Innovation Advisory Council of Malaysia based in the New York Academy of Sciences under the chairmanship of the Malaysian Prime Minister.

He is a Director of the Malaysia-Australia Foundation; patron of the International Young Professionals Foundation and Member of the International Advisory Board of “Engineers Without Borders” Canada and Grand Challenges Canada. He is a member of the National Economic and Social Council Kenya.

He was Chairman and Honorary President of Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC);, President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO); and Co-Chair of Task Force “Science, Technology and Innovation” of the UN Millennium Project.

He served the National Electricity Board and then became a partner of Ewbank Preece Consulting Engineers, Brighton, England; He was an Advisor to the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia; a Commissioner of the Energy Commission of Malaysia and a Member of the Board of Trustees of Engineers Against Poverty, U.K and a Member of the International Commission on Education for Sustainable Development Practice and an Adjunct Professor of National Energy University, Malaysia (UNITEN). He is chairman of the governing board of the Institute for Energy Policy and Research in UNITEN.

He is a Senior Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia; the founder President of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology; Foreign Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering; and Distinguished Honorary Fellow of Institution of Engineers Malaysia, and an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, UK, the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK, the Institution of Engineers, Australia and the Institution of Engineers, Mauritius.


Mr. Miles Kupa

keynote speakerMr. Miles Kupa arrived in Kuala Lumpur to take up his appointment as Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia in 2010. Immediateley prior to this he was a Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra.

Mr. Kupa is a senior career diplomat with extensive experience in the region. Most recently, he served as High Commissioner to Singapore from 2005-08. He was Ambassador to Thailand from 2000-04, his third posting to Thailand; Ambassador to the Philippines from 1986-88. He was Ambassador Iraq from 1983-86. Earlier in his Career he also had diplomatic postings to Egypt and France.

In Canberra, Mr. Kupa earlier held a range of senior positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including as Deputy Secretary from 1999-2000 and First Assistant Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Branch of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1991, and then head of the Office in the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1991-93.

Along with his overseas assignments, these positions in Canberra have given him considerable expertise on a wide range of foreign policy issues, regional and international security, intelligence matters, trade policy (the Free Trade Agreement with Thailand was secured during his term as Ambassador there), trade and investment promotion, as well as corporate management issues.

Mr. Kupa was born in Czechoslovakia in 1946. He is a graduate of the University of Melbourne. He is married to Ms. Zuly Chudori who is also an offcer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. They have one son, Alexander. Mr. Kupa speaks Thai, French and Indonesian, and is Learning Malay.

 

Ar. Boon Che Wee (APAM, RIBA, AIPDM, APEC Architect, ASEAN Architect)

keynote speakerAr. Boon Che Wee (APAM, RIBA, AIPDM, APEC Architect, ASEAN Architect) is the President of Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) since August 2009 and chairs Green Building Index (GBI), and Architect Centre - a PAM subsidiary that provides building advisory and inspection service to the public.

An avowed advocate of green and design as the combined key differentiator in the nation’s competitiveness, he has led the Institute on a series of strategic engagement with the Governments to extend the reach of the Institute’s industry-wide initiatives in these areas, and speaks often on these subjects in Malaysia and internationally.

He is currently a member of the National Professional Services Export Council (NAPSEC), the Advisory Panel of Professional Services Development Corporation (PSDC), Board of Architects Malaysia, ASEAN Architect Council and APEC Architect Council.

Ar Boon Che Wee graduated from the University of Melbourne with both Bachelor of Architecture (Hons.) and Bachelor of Planning & Design. He is a Professional Architect and a director of GRA Architects based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

 

Dr Julia Lamborn ( BEng(civil), GradDipChEng, MEng, PhD, FIEAust CPEng)

keynote speakerJulia Lamborn is the Director, Industry Liaison, Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences and the program coordinator for civil engineering at Swinburne University of Technology. She has been a senior lecturer at Swinburne for 21 years and prior to that was a cooling tower thermal design engineer at the State Electricity Commission of Victoria for 8 years. She has research interests and expertise in landfills, waste management, environmental impact assessment, environmental engineering, engineering eduction, cooling towers and engineering heritage.

She has been very active for over 30 years in Engineers Australia and currently is the Chair of the Environmental College. The role of the College is to focus on accreditation, requirements for environmental engineering programs, engineering education and professional engineering registration standards. Engineers Australia is the national professional body for engineers in Australia and represents over 90,000 members. She regularly is a member of accreditation panels in Australia and currently has been appointed as the mentor to the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka for their Washington Accord application.

She also has held various positions on State Government Authorities and committees for over 25 years, including the Historic Buildings Council, the Heritage Council and Planning Panels Victoria.


Merv Lindsay

keynote speakerMerv Lindsay, the current National President of Engineers Australia, is a civil/structural engineer with over 35 years experience across the industrial, mining, infrastructure and commercial sectors. He is co-managing director of Lindsay & Dynan, a mid size consulting practice with offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Gosford, and from December this year, Perth. Merv founded the company over 30 years ago.

Merv has an innate belief in the nexus between a strong engineering industry and economic prosperity, and believes engineers deliver the linkages between sustainability, quality of life and strong viable communities. From a humanitarian perspective, in the Engineers Australia Year of Humanitarian Engineering one of Merv’s key messages is that in any humanitarian crisis, engineers are pivotal to successful outcomes, and the profession needs to recognize their role, constantly prepare for it, but also share pride in their capability, capacity and record of delivery .

Merv has been active in Engineers Australia for almost 30 years, and has not regretted a single minute of that engagement. He is a passionate advocate of his profession and Engineers Australia and believes that its strength is its members. Through the commitment of those members he believes EA can be a strong and vital voice informing the community, governments and the youth of Australia and beyond that a career in engineering is important, enjoyable, satisfying and rewarding at every level.

His presidential year is characterized by a commitment to embedding a humanitarian culture into engineering practice, and embedding sustainability as a humanitarian obligation.


Ms Lee Sui Fung

keynote speakerMs Lee Sui Fung is a Senior Executive Development Officer of the Green Mark Department (New Development), Building and Construction Authority. She has more than 10 years of experience in the areas of building performance and assessment. She has been actively involved in the development of the BCA Green Mark Assessment Scheme. The BCA Green Mark Scheme was launched in January 2005. This green building rating system promotes the adoption of green building design and technologies that improves energy efficiency and reduces the impact of buildings on the environment.



Mr. Simon Ong

keynote speakerMr. Simon Ong is currently the General Manager (Engineering), Shell Upstream International Asia. He was born in Sibu, Sarawak. He graduated with a Bachelor in Chemical Eng (Hon.) from University of Malaya and a MBA from Rotterdam School of Management. Mr. Ong joined Shell, Miri in 1979. He has 32 years experience in engineering design, project management and general management. He had extensive international experience with Shell Australia, The Netherlands and recently Canada.

 


Loke Ean Bee

keynote speakerLoke Ean Bee is currently the Shell Fuels Technology Manager - Asia Pacific. He is responsible for leading the Fuels Technology R&D and technical services section for Asia Pacific and Middle East. He joined Shell Malaysia in 1988 after graduated as a Chemical Engineer from University of Malaya. He has a MBA degree from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. He is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and Professional Engineer in Malaysia. He was the Chairman of Chemical Engineering Technical Division of Institution of Engineers, Malaysia from 1997-1999.

Loke has worked as Safety Inspector, Technical Sales/Services Engineers and Fuels Technical Manager in Marketing and Sales organisations in Shell Malaysia from 1988 till 2000. He joined Shell Global Solutions in 2000 where he was cross-posted to Shell Technology Centre Thornton, England as the Assistant Lubricant Business Group Manager and Singapore in 2002 as Fuels Manager. Over the last 23 years in the company, Loke has held leadership and senior technology positions in Shell. He was the Global Technology Manager for Premium Gasoline from 2007 till 2010, where he managed the R&D programme for Shell V-Power gasoline worldwide.

His work experience included fuels product R&D, fuel specification development, air quality issues, alternative and future fuels, fuels and lubricant technical services and quality assurance. He has also represented Shell in various technical committees and forums in the region, and was active in the development of the Clean Air Initiatives-Asia’s “Road Map document for Cleaner Fuels and Vehicles in Asia”.

 

Mr. Tan Ngo Chiaw

keynote speakerMr. Tan Ngo Chiaw is currently the Managing Director of CH2M HILL Singapore Pte Ltd. He obtained his Master of Engineering degree from the National University of Singapore in 1990 and has co-authored several journal and conference papers on wastewater systems and odour control. He is a Singapore registered Professional Engineer and is currently the Vice President (Finance) of the Singapore Water Association. Mr. Tan has more than 20 years experience in the field of water and wastewater treatment plant and conveyance system design and construction management.

Mr. Tan was involved in the feasibility study and preliminary design of the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System from 1997 to 1999. In 2000, he was the Design Manager involving in the use of 3D + Database design of the S$2 billion Changi Water Reclamation Plant (WRP). In 2002, he continued as Construction Manager for the Changi WRP, overseeing the major C&S construction activities of the plant which was completed in 2007. He has also been involved in the implementation of Newater plants in Singapore from 2000 to 2008. These newater plants include Bedok, Seletar, Kranji and Changi. Other projects that Mr. Tan has assumed leadership roles included the design and construction of the world’s first seawater reverse osmosis plant using the 18” RO membrane, the laying of 85km of 2.2m diameter newater pipeline and the Active, Beautiful and Clean (ABC) Waters Programme. For Malaysia, Mr. Tan has been involved in the design of the Bayan Baru sewage treatment plant. He is also currently the CH2MHill Project Manager for the Kuching Wastewater Management System Phase 1.

 

Datu Haji Ismawi bin Haji Ismuni

keynote speakerDatu Haji Ismawi bin Haji Ismuni, was born on the 3rd of April 1959. He receives his education from MCE/Royal Military College (RMC) sg. Besi Selangor in 1974-1974, graduated with Bachelor of Science Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Aston University Birmingham, United Kingdom. He has worked as the Sarawak Administrative Officer District Office Mukah in 1983, Sarawak Administrative officer District Office Samarahan in 1985, Assistant Secretary Ministry of Resource Planning Sarawak in 1987, Acting District Officer Dalat, Private Secretary to YAB Chief Minister Sarawak in 1988, District Officer of Dalat 1990, Principal Assistant Secretary Ministry of Industrial Development in 1996, Director of State implemention Monitoring Unit (SIMU) in 2000, Permanent Secretary Minister of Industrial Development Sarawak and currently the Director of State Planning Unit (SPU) Chief Minister’s Department.

Throughout his service he has received Darjah Jasa Bakti Sarawak (DJBS) in 2008, Pegawai Bintang Kenyalang (PBK) in 2002 and Pingat Perkhidmatan Bakti (PPB) (Perak) in 1999. His active contributions as a Board Member of Bintulu Port Authority, Board Member of Faradale Development Sdn Bhd, Board Member of Angkatan Zaman Mansang (AZAM), Deputy Chairman of Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) and the Committee Member of Persatuan Alumni UKM, Sarawak.

 

Dr Chen Shiun

keynote speakerDr Chen Shiun graduated from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand with BE (Honours) and PhD in 1992 and 1996 respectively. He spent two more years as post-doctoral fellow at the same university before moving to Singapore to take up an academic position with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). After spending over 10 years with NTU, he left his Associate Professor position to join Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) at the end of 2008. He is now the Head of Research and Development in SEB.

Since joining SEB, he has spearheaded the forming of the R&D division and established the R&D programmes focusing on Energy Systems, Renewable Energy and Grid Technology. The first programme focuses on sustainability of hydropower, investigation of alternative energy sources and clean energy conversion techniques. The second programme singles out small renewable energy options including solar PV and microhydro, and fosters this portfolio in conjunction with the development of large hydropower in Sarawak. The latter dwells into the transmission, distribution and utilization of electrical power. In addition, he is also tasked with the responsibility in managing the rural electrification efforts, undertaken by SEB as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

Since returning to Malaysia, he has actively participated in many professional activities ranging from participation in SIRIM technical committees, government task forces and study panels with EPU and KeTTHA, and speaking at workshops organized by various agencies including Curtin University, GreenTech Malaysia and at various meetings and conferences.


Joe Eades

keynote speakerJoe Eades is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. He is also the Managing Director of Ispahan Group Pte Ltd providing a range of services including, engineering and consulting for the process industries, green IT solutions including, Engineering Document Management software solutions and disaster recovery solutions for a range of sectors. He also conducts technical training with courses including Process Safety, Risk Assessment and Project Engineering. He spent the past 15 years working in the project industry, designing, implementing and optimizing solutions for the process and pharmaceutical industries and has spent much of that time working on optimizing processes, waste minimization, energy efficiency and integration of complex technologies.

Joe currently holds the post of Vice Chairman of the IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) in Singapore. Joe is also a part time lecturer at NUS (National University of Singapore) where he lecturers a Masters level module on Project Engineering in the department of Chemical and Bio-molecular Engineering. He sits on the advisory panel for Singapore Polytechnic School of Life Sciences, Taylors University College, School of Engineering and is Deputy Chairman for the Chemical Engineering Technical Committee for Institution of Engineers Singapore. Recently he also organised a fundraiser for a Cambodian Street Children’s centre.


Dr Tom Connor AO, HonFIEAust, FTSE

CONNOR Tom_CV2010-02 Dr Tom Connor is Vice President Technology for the global Infrastructure& Minerals (I&M) business unit of Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR). He has been involved with water, coastal engineering and disaster risk management projects in Australia and internationally for over 30 years with the firm. Since 1988, he has also been involved in examining potential climate change impacts and led Engineers Australia’s Sustainability Task Force in the 1990s. In recent years, he has directed KBR’s development of carbon engineering tools and project processes and introduced climate change adaptation methods for projects undertaken by the firm.

Tom is a Past National President of Engineers Australia (1996-97) and received the Order of Australia (AO) award for his services to engineering in 1999. He has also been the recipient of the Queensland Engineer of the Year Award, the Australian Centenary Medal and the Peter Nicol Russell Memorial Medal by Engineers Australia. He is an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia and a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

At the Queensland government level, he is a Director of their bulk water owner and operator - SunWater (2003 to date) and Chair of the Queensland Sustainable Energy Advisory Council (from 2000 to date).

 

Reinhard Haas, PhD (University professor)

Haas Energy Economics Group, Institute of Power Systems and Energy Economics, Vienna University of Technology

Reinhard Haas is professor of Energy Economics at Vienna University of Technology in Austria. He teaches Energy Economics, Regulation and Competition in Energy markets, and Energy Modeling.  His current research focus is on (i) evaluation and modelling of dissemination strategies for renewables; (ii) modelling paths towards sustainable energy systems; (iii) liberalisation vs regulation of energy markets; (iv) energy policy strategies.

He works in these fields since more than 15 years and has published various papers in reviewed international journals. Moreover, he has coordinated and coordinates projects for Austrian institutions as well as the European Commission and the International Energy Agency.


DR V S Murty

CONNOR Tom_CV2010-02 DR V S Murty born June 1945. Obtained Bsc(Hons) physics,MSc (physics) from Andhra University India , Dip Higher education from Madras university India , Doctor of philosophy from Indian Institute of Technlogy Madras India in teaching and research since 1967, served in the department of physics IIT Madras until super annuation and retired as professor in 2010, since then he is the distinguished professor in HiTech group Bhubaneswar and also co-chair Hitech Research & Development foundation. Co chair Industry Institute Interaction Cell of this Hitech group. Guided several doctoral and masters students in the areas of electron spin resonance, magnetic materials, semiconductor physics, atmospheric sciences. Invited by ICSU-COSTED to assist in setting up Moi University Kenya 1984-86. Invited to serve as professor of electronics and director of Berhampur University Orissa India 1996-98. Past vice president, past general secretary of Indian Association of physics teachers. Member institute of physics London Sikha Ratna Award 2010.

 

Dr Alexander Gorin

CONNOR Tom_CV2010-02Dr Alexander Gorin Professor, Higher Doctor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics, PhD degree in Engineering Science

He has been lecturing at Curtin University, Sarawak Campus since 2003. Prior to that, he worked for the University of Auckland, New Zealand. His working history includes as well his service for the Novosibirsk State University, Tomsk State University, Russia; Institute of Thermophysics, Russian Academy of Sciences; Institute of Oil and Gas, Ministry of Oil and Gas, Moscow; and other universities and research institutions. He was invited as a visiting professor at the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, National Academy of Sciences (Sofia, Bulgaria) and the University of Havana/Supreme Institute of Energy Studies (Havana, Cuba).

He pursued fundamental and applied researches in different areas including transport phenomena in packed beds and porous media, absorption, fluidization, gasification, catalytic cleanup technologies, ground source heat pumps, membrane science, thermohydrodynamics of multiphase and multi-component systems, laminar and turbulent flows, heat and mass transfer in turbulent separated flows, film flows, vortex flows and vortex technologies, advanced composite materials, and others. He has published a book, book chapters and many other contributions in books, papers in renowned scholar journals and conference proceedings – totaling more than 170 publications. He is serving as Associate Editor for International Journal of Energy & Technology, a Member of Editorial Board for Global Journal of Power Control & Optimization. 15 of his PhD students have been awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree. Currently he is a supervisor for 5 PhD students in Curtin University. Prof Alexander has served as a keynote speaker for more than 25 congresses, symposia, and conferences worldwide. He was a Chair, Co-chair, Member of Scientific/Organizing Committees and Chairman of Sections for many international conferences worldwide.

 

Ir. Dr. Dominic Ong

CONNOR Tom_CV2010-02Ir. Dr. Dominic Ong is currently a Senior Lecturer and Program Co-ordinator for Civil Engineering in Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus (SUTS). He graduated from the University of Western Australia (UWA) and National University of Singapore (NUS), specializing in Geotechnical Engineering. He has worked in consulting firms in Singapore and Sarawak before joining SUTS. His area of interests includes deep excavation, soil-structure interaction, tunneling, embankment dams and ground improvement. His publication credit includes numerous journal articles (ASCE) and technical papers in local & international conferences & workshops.
